NEW YORK, Jan. 5–Robert Ianniello, owner of landmark Little Italy restaurant, Umberto’s Clam House, today announced the first significant changes in his establishment’s world famous menu in over six years. Referring to a personal invitation he’s extending to the local food and restaurant press, Ianniello made a positive point of the fact that little has changed since Umberto’s opened its doors almost three decades ago

“Our customers can always count on Umberto’s for the quintessential clam sauce (Umberto’s serves it in hot, medium or sweet varieties), and the best in Italian seafood specialties, steaks and chops–all at reasonable prices. But, now we’re formally adding many of our occasional specials to our permanent menu,” stated Ianniello.

Ianniello was referring to an array of chowders, soups and bisques as well as the main courses: seafood risotto, shrimp scampi and numerous pasta specialties–including house favorite lobster ravioli–to his restaurant’s permanent menu.

Ianniello continued, “Umberto’s calls itself ‘The Heart of Little Italy.’ And, that’s because our food is synonymous with the overall unchanged character of our neighborhood. There’s little else like it any-
where. And, doing anything to change that is news. But, really, we’re not changing anything. We’ve just found a permanent place on the menu for some frequent ‘guests.’ “

Ianniello concluded, “Umberto’s is considered somewhat of an anomaly in New York restaurant circles. Tourists tend to gravitate to us because we’re highly recommended in all of the travel guides. But, we get more than our share of regulars and celebrities, despite the tourist traffic, due to the quality of the food and the unrivaled ambience. And we’ll never mess with either of those because they’re both unsurpassed.”

Recent diners have included: Martin Scorcese, Robert DeNiro, Michael Douglas and Bette Midler; and Umberto’s is a frequent stop for some of the City’s tour buses.

Umberto’s is located at 386 Broome Street, between Mott and Mulberry Streets, in Little Italy. Their phone number is 212-431-7545. They’re open from 11AM to 4AM, seven days a week. Seasonal, outdoor dining is available. We accepts all major credit cards. Reservations are not necessary, but they’re encouraged on Friday and Saturday evenings. A function room for parties up to 50 people is also available.
